Fostering Community and Transforming Lives: The Impact of RIVER Schools

September 2, 2022

Rishi Valley Institute for Educational Resources (RIVER)'s multi-grade, multi-level (MGML) learning process emphasises assessment and evaluation and places great importance on community and environment. From the inception of a RIVER school, the local village or community plays a crucial role, showcasing the power of collective effort and shared responsibility. This strong bond between the school and the community forms the foundation for a holistic and impactful educational experience.

School Built by the Community

For a RIVER school to exist, the local community must demonstrate its dedication by providing the necessary land and constructing or furnishing a building. The school and the associated land become the community's property. Maintaining and caring for the school and its surroundings falls upon the community.

This concept aligns with the idea of “sweat equity" and buy-in, as highlighted by Mortenson in his book, “Three Cups of Tea." The community's active involvement ensures ownership and pride in the RIVER school.

Centre for Community Development

The concept of linkage extends beyond the physical construction of the school. RIVER schools serve as centres for community development, fostering a deep sense of belonging and enablement among community members.

The “mother's committees" play a crucial role in driving the success of the RIVER model. These committees are catalysts for change and exert pressure on the programme directors to expand vertically, incorporating middle school programmes and facilities. The school becomes a vibrant meeting place where the community actively participates in environmental improvement initiatives. Students engage in activities such as reforestation, herb garden cultivation, soil conservation studies, and agricultural practices.

The RIVER school acts as a hub, connecting the community through various initiatives, including health education campaigns, festivals, agricultural discussions, preservation of local lore, adult education programmes, and serving as a repository of local information and history. These schools embody the true essence of community schools, encompassing a wide range of educational and developmental opportunities.

Safety, Security, and Nourishment

The presence of a RIVER school in a village brings a sense of safety and security to families, providing respite from the hazards of navigating dusty roads and oncoming traffic. Parents can trust that their children are in a secure environment. The presence of a RIVER school in a village brings a sense of safety and security to families, providing respite from the hazards of navigating dusty roads and oncoming traffic. Additionally, RIVER schools offer a midday meal to all students, serving as an additional source of assurance in regions plagued by malnutrition and hunger. While the benefits may vary from village to village, the impact of RIVER schools on education and opportunities for girls in the region has been remarkable.

In conclusion, RIVER's MGML learning system prioritises academic growth and emphasises the importance of community, environment, and holistic development. From the community's active involvement in establishing and maintaining the school to the numerous initiatives connecting the school to its surroundings, RIVER schools become catalysts for positive change. By fostering a deep sense of ownership, pride, and safety, these schools enable communities to uplift themselves and provide their children with a brighter future.
